Man, these old houses can be truly beautiful again. It’s impressive.

We sincerely considered moving to Detroit and fixing up an old house (we sold our first and bought our 2nd house about a year ago). Planned on having to do private schools, but awesome house right? Well the only drawback was the emergency services still aren’t up to par. So a combo of having higher taxes, private schools, longer commutes and bad emergency services meant we had to pass.

But DAMN the houses you can get down there are just so epic.

I don’t watch Rehab Addict often, but when I do I love that she keeps the vintage character of the house. She did a good job with this one.

I don’t know what your kids are into but they’re schools like College for Creative Studies, Henry Ford Academy that does art. They are Detroit Public schools but not at the same time.

Taxes and emergency services will still get ya, but I’d bet on that whole brush park area becoming nicer after the new red wing’s stadium goes in. (Im assuming thats where that house is)

My kid is more into the pre-school thing at the moment hahaha.

And I know all about CCS, went to a job-fair there once and had tons of friends that have graduated from there (and a couple that teach there now actually).

I know it’s on the rise and it’s going to be great, but right now, I needed solid public schools (on top of the other 2). We bought a house in Canton so public schools are top notch.

Man that’s a lot of work. What a beautiful house!

I haven’t watched that show in a while, but most of the work she does is pretty good.

Ah I see, just wanted to say there are okay public schools too.

I love living in Detroit, but not sure what I’d do if kids were in the equation. Changes priorities.

Yep, if I didn’t have an almost 3 year old, I would have bought a house in Detroit.

YESSSSS! I love that show and the work she does. More old houses need saving. This one is truly epic. It’s so sad to me that almost a whole neighborhood just got lost like that one in Detroit, but man: the ones that get fixed up out of it are beyond amazing.

Yeah, this is the one of the areas that gave Detroit the name the Paris of the midwest. Incredible mansions lined the entire neighborhood. Sadly this is one of the few left.

Kinja'd!!!

This area is poised to get major investment in the coming years though, which will hopefully give it a new lease on life.

I love how they put a cover over the porch and worked it into the bay windows.

Absolutely love the things she does to rehab old homes built in the early 20th century.

Speaking of things like this.. Euclid Ave in Cleveland Ohio (near where I live!) had a TON of historic mansions (mainly because of Rockefeller)

Sadly, most all of the mansions have been demolished and no longer exist.. It’s crazy to think a “Millionaires Row” used to exist in Cleveland at one time...

Nicole Curtis does fantastic work.

For comparison, this is how the house originally looked in 1876:

And how it looked at its worst point, before the city did some stabilization work:

I love those old mansions. So much character! Every one was unique unlike the cookie cutter modern ones.

There is a whole neighborhood near me that in the course of 10 years went from the most exclusive to crack-den. Sadly most like Detroit were bulldozed. A few were saved and turned into condos as the market for 5k sq ft homes is tough.

That is a beautiful old home. It’s amazing that the city came in and at least rebuilt a portion of it after it was burned. I’m down in Toledo, and we have our area of old mansions in the Old West End. Many are in fantastic condition, with more woodwork than a dozen new homes. I do real estate appraisal, so every once in a while I get to go through one of these. It’s been a while though, as this area was hit really hard by the recession. Property values just tanked, with an increase in abandoned homes. Nothing like Detroit, but pretty bad in areas. Toledo just doesn’t have the large national companies to prop up investment like Detroit has, so there is little gentrification. There has been a movement into the downtown areas, with renovated buildings turned into either apartments or condos. Young buyers just love those, and they are pretty cheap as well, less than $150,000 for a nice condo.
